My name is Kim Powell and “About Us” is really “About Me” since I am the founder and sole director of PPS Advantage Ltd. When you deal with the company you are effectively buying my skills and expertise, so you need to know my credentials.
Without bragging too much, I claim to be Australasia’s leading expert in the practical and commercial implementation of the PPSA to help companies protect their assets when a customer becomes insolvent. I am not a lawyer and I try to avoid quoting too much law. In the early stages of my career I was a receiver and liquidator. More recently I headed up the credit recovery function of a major NZ bank, before taking over management of a large distressed mortgage portfolio. In other words - I know a lot about taking and enforcing security over assets.
When the PPSA first became reality at the turn of the century (makes me sound so old) it was a natural area of interest for me. I thought that if I could help protect you from people like me then I could have a thriving business! Poacher turned gamekeeper in other words.
So I, together with my business partner, Mary Bayne, formed EDX Ltd in 2000 - specialising in PPSA consultancy and registration services. From the outset we had 2 fundamental principles:
We would provide sensible commercial advice to customers to help them get the best commercial result from using PPSA, and
We would provide the most efficient registration platform to help customers register on the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR).
This proved to be a winning formula and we soon built a market leadership position in the New Zealand market - always accepting it is a small market. On the back of that, I moved to Melbourne in 2010 to lead our entry in to the Australian market since similar legislation was about to be introduced “across the ditch”
The Australian market was tougher to crack and we had some stiff competition. We survived and over the next few years built a pretty successful business, sticking to the same two principles. We then had to work out how to take the business to the next level, which meant we either had to invest a great deal of money to expand or sell to a competitor.
We took the more conservative option and sold the entire business (Australia and New Zealand) to Equifax, or Veda as it was known in early 2016.
I stayed on in Melbourne for a couple of years to help Equifax integrate EDX into its main operations, before moving back to NZ permanently in 2018. Since then I have been “semi retired” and building a new home, overlooking the coast out of Whangarei.
I kept in touch with Equifax in New Zealand and it soon became apparent that even though the PPS legislation has been with us for 20 odd years, there is still a need for specialist advice and knowledge in the area.
Hence the idea of PPS Advantage Ltd which started trading earlier this year in an agreement with Equifax/EDX.
The idea is quite simple:
I provide the specialist knowledge and advice
Equifax provides the registration platform, customer support and back up
Equifax can provide ancillary services such as credit checks, data cleanse and customer alerts.
The wonder of technology means that I can run the business from my lifestyle block overlooking the beach. This is just as well since we are still in the shadow of Covid-19. I do occasionally venture out to meet customers!
Meanwhile I am trying to master other forms of technology such as video conferencing so that I can “meet you” to discuss your needs.
I look forward to being of service.
